A Day Metal Detecting at Tiger Tail and Residents’ Beach
I spent part of the day wandering Tiger Tail and Residents’ Beach with the metal detector, and let’s just say the beaches didn’t disappoint — at least in terms of “character-building finds.” Tiger Tail was its usual self: bottle caps, mystery screws from every beach cart built since 1983, and one metal object that honestly looked like a Dorito that lost a fight.
The weather was classic post-Thanksgiving Florida — chilly enough in the morning to question all my life choices, warm enough by lunch to wonder why I was wearing sleeves. I stayed out of the water… until a bottle cap dragged me back in, because of course it did.
Residents’ Beach had more activity and more coins. Plenty of dimes for some reason. And, as always, I pulled a couple of tent stakes — the unofficial currency of Marco Island. The highlight wasn’t even a find: a young kid followed me around for a bit, then handed me a little parting gift before he left. That made my day more than the $1.50 in treasure.
Wrapped it up back at the shop with the usual sorting: bottle caps, pull tabs, fishing weights, a suspicious earring, and two fish hooks I’m very glad I pulled out of the sand before someone’s foot met them.
Another simple day on Marco Island. A little sun, a little sand, some junk, some coins, and a small reminder of why I enjoy doing this — you never know what you’re going to dig up, and you never know who you’ll meet while you’re out there.
